The Colors of Spring – Wildflowers, 'Greening' Mountains and Locally-grown Strawberries

Locally-grown strawberries are available at roadside markets and you can pick your own at Darnell Farms.

The Spring 'greening' is now working its way up the mountains. The valleys are already a lush green and soon the peaks of the Smokies will match. Driving down the mountain from Clingmans Dome, you can watch the progression of Spring in fast-forward. And along the way, be sure to keep an eye out for wildflowers.

The highly varied vegetation of the Smoky Mountains includes approximately 1,500 species of native flowering herbs, shrubs and trees. And the spring ephemerals are poking their heads up looking for sun before the trees completely leaf out.

In May, look for crested dwarf iris, trillium, phacelia, trout lily, silverbell and jack-in-the-pulpit.

Take a look at our Wildflower Blooming Calendar and plan a trip to see the Smokies in Spring!
