Winter Craft Series at the Stecoah Valley Center: Knitting for Beginners

Beggining Saturday February 4, this is a two day class on Saturdays in February ( Feb. 4 and 11) This class is for beginners or people who would like a refresher course in the basics. Winter Walk at Brush Creek

Come join Land Trust for the Little Tennessee's Land Stewardship Director, Dennis Desmond, for a winter walk along the Little Tennessee River at Needmore to the old Brush Creek Farm. The walk will lead to a secluded cove! People are encouraged to carpool as parking on Needmore is limited. Free Bluegrass Benefit Concert

Where: Swain County Center for the Arts, Swain County High School, Bryson City

You are invited to a FREE Bluegrass Benefit Concert featuring Cody Shuler and Pine Mountain Railroad this Saturday, February 4, at 7:00 pm at Swain County Center for the Arts in Bryson City. This bebefit, "Giving Hope," is for The Hope Chest located in Asheville, which helps women with cancer who have no insurance or insufficient insurance to cover the cost of treatment in 22 Western North Carolina Counties. The benefit is organized by Linda Wike, who is a cancer survivor who was helped by The Hope Chest.

5th Annual Chocolate Cook-off

What a sweet way to support your local library! Area chocolatiers compete for prizes and you get to sample these delectable goodies all made from scratch. Fundraiser for the Friends of the Marianna Black Library. $6 admission. $1 off for Friends of the Marianna Black Library members. Kids under 6 are free. Winter Craft Series at the Stecoah Valley Center: Quilting for Beginners

Beginning Saturday, February 11, this is a three day class on Saturdays in February (Feb. 11, 18 and 25) In this Winter Craft Series class you will learn the basics of piecing a quilt top using a sewing machine, including how to properly use a rotary cutter to cut your fabric. Students should be comfortable using a sewing machine. PEANUTS™ Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown

The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad (GSMR) is pleased to announce the PEANUTS™ Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown Excursion and Valentine Sweetheart Train. Passengers will join Charlie Brown, Lucy and Snoopy for old fashioned Valentine's Day fun based on the popular television episode titled by the same name. This special event train will depart the historic Bryson City depot and travel along the Tuckasegee River to Dillsboro for a 1 1/2 hour layover. Enjoy special Valentine's activities as well as a relaxing afternoon in the quaint town of Dillsboro.

FaceMug Class

When: 1:00 P.M. - 3:00 P.M.
Where: Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center, Stecoah

Instructor Rob Withrow will bring mugs pre-prepared for you to add your own face design - a self portrait; a caricature; your favorite animal; something whimsical - the choice is yours to create. After the class, Rob will take your creation back to his studio, add a handle, glaze and fire it. He will then bring the finished mugs back to Stecoah for you to pick up (usually takes a week). Participants will need to wear clothes they don't mind getting messy and/or bring an apron. Please call ahead to register for the class. Tuition is $25.

Appalachian Mountain Dulcimer Concert

Where: Swain County Center for the Arts, 1415 Fontana Rd., Bryson City, NC

Featuring two of the country's finest players of the Appalachian Mountain Dulcimer, Lois Hornbostel and Ehukai Teves, playing spirited traditional Southern Appalachian, Celtic, Hawaiian, and other World Music. Lois is one of the country's favorite dulcimer players and producer of the week-long event in June, "Dulcimerville"." Ehukai, one of Hawaii's best musicians, also plays bass, guitar, ukulele, and more, and has composed over 300 songs. Together their music is inspired and joyous.

After the performance, stay and enjoy refreshments and an exhibition of the Swain County Center for the Arts permanent collection.

John Tartaglia's Imaginocean

Sara Evans
