Join Friends of the Smokies for a guided hike that explores the cultural history of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park form the days of the Cherokee and early European settlers to the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Hiking enthusiast and author Danny Bernstein will lead this 4 mile hike along the Kephart Prong Trail, interpreting the remains of the CCC camp and a backcountry shelter. The hike is easy to moderate in difficulty and has a total elevation gain of 950ft. Hikers will also visit the nearby Oconaluftee Visitor Center, featuring interactive exhibits that tell the cultural history of life in the Smokies, and receive a Ranger-guided tour of the adjoining Mountain Farm Museum, a collection of historic log buildings gathered from throughout the Smoky Mountains and preserved on a single site.
Hikers should come prepared with food, water, and appropiate hiking gear for the all day excursion.
