he Bryson City July 4th Freedom Fest celebration will start off with a burst of energy — the Firecracker 5K race that takes runners on a scenic route up Deep Creek Road. Click here for race info.

An entertainment stage, food and craft vendors will set up on Everett Street, which will be closed to traffic from the town square to Mitchell Street. The Bryson City Rotary Club will sell barbecue dinners from their tent in front of the Old Court House. Specialty foods include funnel cakes, homemade ice cream and roasted corn.

After the awards are presented to the 5K runners, the Pet Contest sponsored by PAWS (Placing Animals Within Society) and the Bryson City Veterinary Clinic will begin. It is an unusual contest because every entry is a blue-ribbon winner. Categories include "Best Tail Wag" and "Looks Most Like Owner."

Music is a main attraction throughout the day and bands will take two stages this year. Local favorites such as Commonfolk, Reel Tyme and Frank Lee will join a lineup of area musicians ranging from folk to gospel to rock. A Tater Cook-Off and appearance by Elvis have been crowd favorites for years.

Freedom Fest ends with one of the best fireworks shows in the mountains. David Maynard, fireworks organizer, promises the show will be more spectacular than ever this year. Launched from the top of airport hill, the fireworks can be seen from just about anywhere in town, beginning at dark. The Star Spangled Banner will be performed during the fireworks.
