Friends of the Smokies Classic Hike Series: Little Cataloochee

Join Friends of the Smokies for monthly guided hikes in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park featuring interpretation and leadership by author and hiking expert Danny Bernstein. Each hike highlights an achievement or cause that Friends of the Smokies has supported in the Park.
This month's hike is Little Cataloochee; a 6.6 (round trip) mile trail of 1,450 ascent and moderate difficulty. Little Cataloochee features a chapel, cabins, and cemetery. The theme of the hike will be elk management and monitoring.

The Wild Fern Studio: Foundations of Medicinal Herbs

Empty Bowls: Local Potters Event for Food Banks

When: 5:00 - 7:00 pm

Where: John C. Campbell Folk School, Brasstown

First, select a handcrafted bowl from a collection donated by area potters. Next, fill your bowl with a hearts meal of soup, salad, bread, and dessert prepared by Executive Chef Steve Cipriano. Stay for live music, and finally, take your bowl home with you to keep as a reminder of hunger in our local and global communities. Breakfast and lunch are provided and prizes will be awarded in a variety of categories including longest putt, closest to the pins, straightest drive, and second and third place teams, with the first place team receiving a $400 cash prize.
All proceeds benefit the Swain High School Fellowship of Christian Athletes Revival on April 1 & 2 at the Swain County Performing Arts Center.

Cherokee's Annual Opening Day Fishing Tournament

Date(s): Mar 26, 2016 - Mar 27, 2016

Where: Cherokee Indian Reservation

This tournament requires just an $11 entry fee to compete for $20,000 in tagged fish in the rivers on the Qualla Boundary (excluding the 2.2 miles of catch-and-release waters). Tagged fish will be specially stocked for this event, and when you catch one, you redeem it for cash prizes ranging from $20 to $500. Prizes can be redeemed at Cherokee Chamber of Commerce 516 Tsali Blvd (Hwy 441N across from the fairgrounds). Times for redemption are listed on your entry fee paperwork. Open to all ages and for all legal fishing methods. Register to redeem cash prizes anywhere fishing licenses are sold. More info
