April 2, 2016, marks the 85th anniversary of renowned author Horace Kephart's death in an automobile accident. The family has arranged a weekend of events designed to celebrate the remarkable life and talents of Mr. Kephart:

Southeastern Regional Championship Mountain Bike Race

Where: Tsali Recreation Area

This annual mountain bike race is a favorite of racers throughout the Southeast.  Held on the trails at the Tsali Recreation Area in Western North Carolina, some of the most famous trails in the Eastern US, this event has classes for all ages and levels with no prequalifying. Thousands of dollars in cash and prizes, series awards banquet. Saturday individual time trial on Mouse loop at 3 pm. Sunday Cross Country race on right and left loops. Friends of the Smokies Classic Hike Series: Porters Creek

Date(s): Apr 12, 2016

Join Friends of the Smokies for monthly guided hikes in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park featuring interpretation and leadership by author and hiking expert Danny Bernstein. Each hike highlights an achievement or cause that Friends of the Smokies has supported in the Park.
This month's hike is Porters Creek; a 7.2 mile (round trip) trail of 1,400 ascent and moderate difficulty. Porters Creek features profuse wildflowers, a cabin, and cemetery. The theme of the hike is supporting bear management.

Oconaluftee Indian Village

Where: Oconaluftee Indian Village

Mon-Sat; closed Sundays. As you step into the Oconaluftee Indian Village, you’re transported back to witness the challenges of Cherokee life at a time of rapid cultural change. Tour guides help you explore the historic events and figures of the 1760's. Visitors can interact with villagers as they  participate in their daily activities. The Village also hosts live reenactments, interactive demonstrations, and Hands-On Cherokee Pottery for Kids classes. More info

Back Porch Old Time Music Jam

Cherokee Pottery Festival

The Didanisisgi (mud daubers) Pottery Festival will feature Cherokee potters selling their work as well as participating in a variety of roundtable discussions about Cherokee pottery, including family traditions, tools used, patterns, etc. Food will be available for purchase. Open to the public, this is a great opportunity for Cherokee art collectors and pottery enthusiasts to meet and talk with potters. More info

Smoky Mountain Relay

12th Annual Wave Sport Nantahala Open

National Junior Ranger Day

Where: Oconaluftee Visitor Center, Cherokee

Children and their families can join in a variety of free, hands-on activities including ranger-guided walks, historic toy making, talking to a real wildland firefighter, making dinner bells at a blacksmith shop, and visiting touch tables with animal skins, skulls, and scat. Information about specific programs is available at each visitor center.

Children can earn their free Junior Ranger patch by completing three specially planned activities. A Junior Ranger booklet is also available for those who would like to explore the park in more depth. The Junior Ranger booklets, produced in cooperation with Great Smoky Mountains Association, can be purchased for $2.50 each at park visitor centers. The booklets are designed to serve a variety of age targeted groups from 5-12.
